Ukrainian Noodle and Ham Casserole
Ingredients
- 1.5 c egg noodles
- 1 T butter (unsalted) (melted)
- 3/4 c cooked ham (ground or diced)
- 1/4 c grated cheese (or more, to taste)
- 1 egg (slightly beaten)
- 1/4 c single cream
- 1/2 t Salt (Table) (to taste, depending on saltiness of ham)
- 1/4 c buttered bread crumbs
Method
Preheat the oven to 350F/Gas 4. Butter an 8" or 9" square baking dish; set aside.
Cook the egg noodles.
While the noodles cook, prepare your other ingredients: dice the ham (if applicable); grate the cheese; combine the egg, cream, and salt; prepare your buttered bread crumbs; set all aside.
Mix the drained noodles with the melted butter; mix in the ham and cheese. Add the egg mixture. Spoon into the baking dish and top with the buttered bread crumbs.
Bake at 350F/Gas 4 for about 45 minutes, or until done.
Notes
SJ Note 19 Jan 2012: This was only mediocre; we ate it, but it's too dry. I think my paring down of the recipe affected that: with more in the pan, it would have had a thicker layer under the bread crumbs, and thus been creamier. Aside from that, the dish wasn't very exciting, though, so I won't be bothering to try it again with adjustments.
