Ingredients

  • 2 c Flour (Plain)
  • 1 t sugar (can reduce or omit)
  • 1 T baking powder
  • 1 t salt
  • 8 T butter (unsalted) (cold, cubed)
  • 3/4 c milk (at most; add gradually)

Method

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.  Cut butter into the mixture until it begins to look like cornmeal.

Make a well in the flour mixture and slowly add milk into the middle, a bit at a time.  Knead dough with your fingers and add milk when necessary.  Roll out dough onto a lightly floured surface to desired thickness.  Cut with small biscuit cutter.

Butter the bottom of a skillet and place the biscuits in the pan.  Cook on the stovetop for 12 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

SJ Note: This recipe didn't work for me.  If you try it, be sure to cook them over a LOW heat.  Since most biscuits go into a piping hot oven, I put the pan on high heat, but the bottoms just burnt to a crisp.  They didn't rise, and they weren't tasty (I'd cut off the burnt bit).  Perhaps there's a lot that got left out of the recipe write-up; that seems to happen a lot with foodnetwork's recipes.  If you're inclined to try this recipe, I'd suggest seeing if you could find the relevant clip from the show to watch first.
